Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd has renewed its calls for the federal government to send a ship to the Southern Ocean to monitor the Japanese whaling fleet after an altercation between the two.

Sea Shepherd says the Japanese whaling fleet has initiated a dangerous clash with its vessel The Bob Barker that endangered lives and property.

Sea Shepherd has been trailing the Japanese fleet attempting to disrupt its operations.

The Bob Barker's captain, Peter Hammarstedt, has told Murray Silby his ship was ambushed on Sunday night under the cover of darkness by the Japanese fleet.
