The search for a missing 20-year-old American footballer who was last seen jumping into the raging post-storm surf at Bondi Beach has been suspended.

Emergency services have been searching for University of Sydney student Endicott Ackerman from Clifton, Virginia, since Monday afternoon after reports of a man in distress in the water.

Water police, PolAir and coastal commands will continue routine sweeps of the coastline while police divers plan to resume their search when sea conditions improve.
