A search is underway for a man who sparked a lockdown at Sydney Boys High School.

Police were called to the Moore Park school on Wednesday afternoon after a teacher challenged a man who was spotted on school grounds.

He was seen carrying a grey shopping bag but police stressed, contrary to earlier reports, at "no time was a firearm sighted".

The man was later seen leaving the school and police began searching for him.

The lockdown at the school has been lifted.
