The search for a missing kayaker whose vessel was found overturned on NSW's Lake Illawarra will resume Sunday morning.

It's believed the unidentified kayaker set out about 2.30am with a headlamp but less than four hours later the empty, overturned kayak was discovered along with fishing equipment.

Water police, PolAir and volunteers are expected to resume their search about 8am Sunday, with authorities asking for anyone who has information to come forward.

Police say they haven't received any related missing persons reports but are taking the matter seriously.
