The search for a 59-year-old man who went missing while kayaking in waters off Perth's south has been suspended and will only resume if fresh leads emerge.

Stephen Angel activated his personal locator beacon just before 11am on Wednesday, but only his kayak, a paddle and the beacon were found.

The search operation from Cape Peron began immediately and continued on Thursday but was suspended in the afternoon due to unfavourable weather conditions.

On Friday morning, mounted police began combing the beachfront, joining aircraft and vessels in the search.

It ended on Friday afternoon, with police saying the search covered an extensive area.

Family members described Mr Angel as fit, strong and experienced on the water.

"It's worrying to think what could have gone wrong," a female relative told 7 News on Thursday.

"He's so good out there with that sort of thing."
