Homicide Squad detectives and search and rescue divers are resuming a search for human remains in a Melbourne river following the murder of Brendan David Bernard.

Remains of the 32-year-old, who was known to police, were found scattered throughout the Maribyrnong River early in February.

Police say they have since spoken to a number of people as part of the investigation and a further river search will resume for more body parts on Friday.

"Investigators would like to reassure local residents that the police activity today is an extension of the previous search activity as all the remains have not been found, not as a result of the discovery of additional body parts," police said in a statement early on Friday.

It is expected divers will search in the vicinity of Burton Crescent towards the end of a pathway that extends down toward the river.

Mr Bernard's last known movements were in Melbourne's CBD on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 27.

On February 5 a runner spotted a severed forearm, marked with a distinctive red devil tattoo, floating near a restaurant.

Subsequent searches unearthed a second limb and a bag of flesh upstream, while a member of the public found another limb two days later.

A second bag of flesh was discovered by a woman rowing.

Police have previously said they believed Mr Bernard's remains were in the river for about a week.
