Search suspended for NSW rock fisherman

A search has been suspended for a rock fisherman who was swept into the sea at Jervis Bay.

A search has been suspended for a rock fisherman who was swept into the ocean at Jervis Bay.

Police said the man, who can't swim, was fishing with three friends on a rock platform at Little Beecroft Head when he was swept into the sea about 2.30am (AEDT) on Monday.

Police don't believe the man was wearing a lifejacket.

Port Kembla Water Police, PolAir, the Rescue Helicopter and Lifesaver Helicopter had been searching the area on Monday.

On Monday afternoon, a police spokeswoman told AAP the search had been suspended because there had been "absolutely no sight" of the missing man.

"We've been told he wasn't wearing a lifejacket and he can't swim," she said.

"They've been looking for him with three helicopters since 5am this morning and ... now they're thinking it's time to give it up." Police are urging rock fishers to have a careful look at conditions before heading out, and always to wear a lifejacket.
