They came into the world together and now two toddler twins pulled unconscious from a Sydney backyard pool have died within days of each other.

The 23-month-old boy and girl were rushed to hospital with a police escort last Tuesday after being found in the Kellyville Ridge pool around 7pm.

They spent their second Christmas in a critical condition, with supporters hoping for a festive "miracle" and praying for their recovery.

The girl died on Boxing Day after almost a week in hospital.

Her brother died three days later on Thursday.

"Your beautiful babies came into this world together, and now they fly with their wings together," a friend of the children's parents posted on Facebook on Thursday night.

"May you... find comfort in knowing your two babies will hold hands on their next journey together."

News of the twins' ordeal had spread through the community, with a nearby Catholic church holding a special service for them before Christmas.

People have taken to social media to send messages of support to the parents following the little boy's death.

One woman talked of a "glorious place in heaven" for the toddlers.

"A place in the kingdom only fit for a prince & princess," she said.

The toddlers are the youngest of six children in the family and their mother was heard screaming for help after making the discovery, the Seven Network reported.

A neighbour assisted with CPR and later told reporters she did the best she "could possibly do to keep those children going".

The deaths are among a spate of drowning cases over the Christmas period.

On Tuesday night, a 14-year-old boy went missing while swimming at Sydney's Maroubra beach.

The search for him is now classified as a recovery operation, police say.
