Second win for mix-and-match Ferns

The Silver Ferns have racked up their second big win at the netball World Cup in Sydney with a 74-38 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

The Silver Ferns have continued their mix-and-match start to the netball World Cup, racking up a 74-38 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

Coach Waimarama Taumaunu again made full use of her bench, all 12 players getting good court time in the Kiwis' second pool match at Sydney's Olympic Park as they looked to sharpen for Sunday's key match against defending champions Australia.

They won each quarter by ever-increasing margins and tightened up in several key areas, including shooting accuracy and turnovers.

But what pleased Taumaunu most was an overall improvement in attack.

"I thought we were very safe on attack, which we needed to be because we didn't get much ball off them to start with," she said.

"I was pleased with all the lines that went on and we've now had everyone in all the varieties of positions that we would look to have."

Trinidad, backing up from Friday's 73-32 loss to Australia, pressured early on but faded in the closing stages to allow the Kiwis a comfortable victory.

Taumaunu's starting line-up featured an unusual omission, midcourt lynchpin Laura Langman spending some rare time on the bench while Shannon Francois ran at centre.

Langman's injection at halftime, with New Zealand holding an unremarkable 37-25 lead, revitalised the attacking third.

The Silver Ferns ran away with the third quarter 19-8 to lead 56-33 at the last break, then consolidated in the closing 15 minutes to take the final spell 18-5.

Both sets of Silver Ferns shooters displayed a much-needed improvement in accuracy after disappointing in Friday's match.

Bailey Mes, who could only manage 77 per cent against Barbados, looked more assured despite some close marking and missed only four of her 25 shots on goal for 84 per cent.

Jodi Brown and Maria Tutaia both hit 80 per cent but although Malia Paseka's circle work and rebounding was excellent, she couldn't crack the same mark, sinking 21 from 27 for 77 per cent.

Taumaunu was happier with those figures, although she admits they'll have to improve further to push Australia.

"We were over 80 for three of them today, we missed 16 shots and rebounded nine so there's actually only seven that were going out."
