Secrets threaten to shatter friendship

Anita Heiss' latest book about contemporary indigenous women explores whether friends really do share everything, and what happens when secrets are kept.

She's credited with inventing koori chick lit, and now indigenous author Anita Heiss is back with a book about a group of friends with secrets.

The book's title, Tiddas, is Koori English for the word sisters and refers to the bond shared by the five women who have been friends for decades.

They meet once a month to discuss books and their own complicated personal stories.

But their intertwined lives start to unravel, driving the dramas that unfold through the novel.

Marriage, divorce, betrayal and the challenges of balancing motherhood with a career - themes that will resonate with many readers - are all explored in this tale about contemporary life for Indigenous Australians.

It's a novel that asks whether a strong sense of sisterhood is enough to keep friends together.

* Tiddas, Anita Heiss. Published by Simon & Schuster Australia in March 2014. RRP $29.99.
