Security guards need proper training: ASQA

The training regulator wants an overhaul of security guard training courses after concerns about a number of deaths of patrons restrained by guards.

Poorly-trained security guards are posing a risk to public safety, the national training regulator says.

The Australian Skills Quality Authority is concerned about the quality of security courses following a number of deaths of patrons restrained by guards in recent years.

Its review found some security training courses were too short for people to gain proper skills, students enrolling into courses may not have proper language and numeracy requirements and inconsistencies between states on security licences.
