Security tight for Vic Anzac Day services

An unprecedented police presence will ensure Victorians are safe at Anzac Day commemorations, Daniel Andrews says.

Security will be tighter than ever after police foiled an alleged Anzac Day terror plot, but Victorians have been told they'll be safe at centenary commemorations.

Five Melbourne men were arrested in pre-dawn counter-terror raids on Saturday over an alleged plan to attack police at Anzac Day events.

Police have promised an unprecedented security presence when Australians remember the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

"I'm confident that Victoria Police will do everything possible to keep all of us safe, whether it be here at the Shrine on Saturday, at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, or at the many events that will be conducted this weekend," Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Mr Andrews noted community and political leaders trying to stop radicalisation of young people were often 20, 30 or 40 years older than those they aimed to reach.

"I think we need to do much more to engage with a big group of young, positive role models who can have a conversation that's much more contemporary," he said.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said as a former Multicultural Affairs Minister he had received reports about disaffected Victorian youth - and stressed they weren't just from Islamic communities.

"There does need to be a greater level of engagement with those youths," he said.
