A misstep off a Segway by American Brandt Snedeker has cost the Australian PGA Championship one of it's biggest drawcards.

The mystery surrounding a knee injury suffered by Snedeker in China which ruled him out of this week's tournament at Royal Pines was solved on Wednesday when it was revealed the world No.9 landed awkwardly when hopping off a Segway during a corporate outing.

Snedeker, who was in China for last week's world golf championships event, immediately withdrew from his only stop during the Australian summer and flew home to Nashville, Tennessee.

Doctors say Snedeker bruised his left tibia and strained the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee but he doesn't not believe he'll need surgery.

It's expected the injuries will sideline Snedeker for at least two weeks.

Snedeker's absence leaves world No.2 Adam Scott as the only world top 10 player at this week's Australian PGA Championship, with American Rickie Fowler, the world No.43, the second-highest ranked player in the tournament.
