Sei Young Kim targets LPGA record score

South Korea's Sei Young Kim has an eight-shot lead, going into the final round of the LPGA Tour's Thornberry Classic at 24 under par.

Sei Young Kim has the great Annika Sorenstam's LPGA Tour tournament scoring record within reach after turning the Thornberry Creek Classic into a procession.

The South Korean fired an eight-under-par 64 third round on Saturday to get to 24 under and take an eight-shot lead from countrywoman Amy Yang (67) in Oneida, Wisconsin.

Australia's Katherine Kirk started the tournament with a 10-under 62 and has been sub-par every round but finds herself 10 shots behind Kim in a tie for sixth going into the final round after her 69.

Kim, who had a 63 on Thursday and a 65 on Friday, tied Sorenstam's 54-hole record of 24 under, set at the Mizuno Classic in Japan in 2003, after picking up an eagle and six birdies on Saturday.

She can now overhaul Sorenstam's 72-hole record of 27-under par, set at the Standard Register Ping in 2001 in Phoenix, if she shoots a 68 or better.

"I just want to keep challenging myself and what I can do," Kim said. "Even if I break it, I'll keep (making) the challenges higher. That's my goal."

Minjee Lee is the second-best Australian in a tie for 35th at 10 under, with Rebecca Artis a shot further back.

Kim, who is seeking her first win of the season, was a disappointing 25th at last week's Women's PGA Championship. After struggling at the major, she asked, "What's wrong with me?" She turned to YouTube videos to "make my mind stronger."

They apparently worked. The best advice?

"Just trust yourself," she said. "But before this week even I heard that. I didn't trust myself even though I have potential. But after the major tournament, I realised, 'OK, I can do that.' If I imagine, it comes true. It's come true."
