Some residents in the leafy suburb of South Hobart have been temporarily relocated as the chemicals are exploded on Saturday afternoon.

"There may be some activity in the area this afternoon, including loud noises, while police safely dispose of some chemicals in a nearby open paddock," police said in a statement on Saturday.

"But there's no cause for alarm."

The chemicals were found at a South Hobart property on Friday night and police say they are legal.
