Sell-outs already for Coast's Com Games

Several events, including the opening ceremony, are guaranteed to be sell-outs for next year's Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, organisers have confirmed.

Demand for lower-profile events is proving just as high as for the popular sports at next year's Commonwealth Games, with finals for badminton and table tennis also "sold out" 10 months before the Gold Coast event.

Games organisers have revealed more than 1.2 million requests for tickets have been received after a month-long expressions of interest phase ended on Monday night.

Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (GOLDOC) chief executive Mark Peters says most interest is for swimming, track and field, netball and rugby sevens, with most major finals over-subscribed.

Mr Peters says the opening ceremony is also already over-subscribed while the closing ceremony is expected to be over-subscribed when all requests are processed.

"It's been interesting, seeing some of the initial analysis; we now have seen a sell-out in the finals of the badminton and the table tennis, which are sports that are not high on the radar here in Australia," he said.

Mr Peters says the response shows organisers were on the money when it came to ticket prices and, in some cases, limiting people to four tickets per request.

"There are only three sports that we limited it to four tickets and they were swimming, diving and track cycling," Mr Peters said.

"Glasgow had nine sports that were limited to four tickets so we were very happy with the process from the beginning."

Organisers will now begin a computer-driven independent allocation of tickets with applicants to discover which events they'll be attending by the end of June.

Remaining tickets will then be made available for general sale in July.
