A worker thought he had found a mannequin at a Melbourne tip until he realised it was a semi-naked corpse.
Police are waiting for an autopsy report to determine the cause of death of the man whose remains were found at the Hampton Park landfill site in Melbourne's southeast.
A worker found what he thought was a store mannequin among household and industrial waste just after 8am on Tuesday before making the grim realisation and calling police.
Homicide squad Detective Senior Sergeant Shane O'Connell said police did not know the man's identity, how he died or how he got there.
"Based on inquiries with the landfill centre management, we believe that he was brought in on one of the trucks this morning," he told reporters.
"As far as how long he may have been deceased, that will be a matter for the coroner and the pathologist to determine subject to a post-mortem later on today."
Det Snr Sgt O'Connell said the man had no apparent injuries but was semi-naked.
"But we're unsure whether that was the way he was this morning or (whether) that may have been disturbed by the machinery on site."
Det Sen Sgt O'Connell said the tip had a combination of household, industrial and commercial rubbish, and served a large part of Melbourne's east and parts of rural Victoria.
