Senate calls govt to act on abuse redress

The Senate has called for a national redress scheme for victims of child sex abuse.

The Senate has called on the federal government to step in if institutions fail to fund redress for survivors of child sexual abuse.

The motion by Greens senator Rachel Siewert, backed by the Senate on Wednesday, calls on the government to commit to a national redress scheme and provide funding of last resort.

"Most survivors of child abuse have not been able to seek the compensation they deserve. We need a way for survivors to get redress," she said in a statement.
