A Senate committee will investigate how a national vote on same-sex marriage could and should go ahead.

Greens senator Janet Rice won support to refer a same-sex marriage plebiscite to the legal and constitutional affairs committee, which will also look at funding for the yes and no campaigns.

The inquiry, to report in September, will also look at what question could be put to a vote and whether matters of equality and human rights should be dealt with by a plebiscite.
