Senate tactics play out on fair work bill

The government has struck a deal with the crossbench to push gutted legislation to change fair work laws through the Senate, but ran out of time on Monday

An attempt by the government to push watered-down workplace relations legislation through the Senate has failed.

The government had attempted unsuccessfully to force senators to stay back late to vote on the legislation after reaching a deal with crossbenchers.

It had tried to move a motion extending upper house hours but Labor used its chance to speak until time ran out for the motion and the senate adjourned by the usual rules.

Debate is expected to continue on Tuesday.
