Senator warns of submarine program blowout

South Australian senator Rex Patrick fears Australia's Future Submarine program could blow out by billions of dollars given delays.

Australia's Future Submarine program is likely to blow out by billions, a South Australian senator is warning.

Senator Rex Patrick, a former defence contractor who recently replaced Nick Xenophon, believes a professional project manager should be brought in to oversee the program.

"Given that the project is running across three to four decades and is a $50 billion program, these sorts of delays, they cascade through -- it could be a $1 to $2 billion blowout on the evidence that we have at the moment," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.
