Senior ANZ official steps down

The head of ANZ's Australian business, Philip Chronican, is stepping down and will be replaced by commerical banking executive Mark Whelan.

The head of ANZ's Australian operations has quit and will be replaced by the lender's global head of commercial banking.

Philip Chronican has held role of chief executive Australia since 2011, and is leaving to pursue a non-executive career after 32 years in banking, ANZ said.

Mark Whelan will replace Mr Chronican on April 3, but will not assume all of his duties, as ANZ's New Zealand chief executive David Hisco will assume his responsibilities as global head of retail.

ANZ chief executive Mike Smith said the bank had continued to improve its position in its home market as a strong, stable and growing business under Mr Chronican.

"Under Phil's leadership our Australian franchise is now stronger than ever with consistent above system growth in home and business lending," he said.
