A neighbourhood argument over barking dogs that led to a bloody samurai sword attack has led to a man being jailed for more than seven years.
Carle Pearson Legge was found guilty of grievous bodily harm by a West Australian jury, following the horrific attack on his neighbour Matthew Worthington in February 2012.
Court documents show how Legge and Mr Worthington were arguing over the fence of their neighbouring properties in Brookton, south east of Perth.
Mr Worthington was arguing with Legge over his dogs, which were barking aggressively and moving backwards and forwards across the boundary fence.
After Mr Worthington banged a poly pipe on the ground to try and scare the dogs, his father Murray fired a gunshot into the air.
As the argument escalated, Legge `mooned' Mr Worthington and his father before returning with the sword.
Swinging the blade wildly, while urging his dogs to join in the attack, Legge hit Mr Worthington on the back of the head, leaving him with a 10cm wound so deep it cut into the skull and severed two arteries.
Another swing sliced Mr Worthington's toe in half.
WA's Supreme Court was told Mr Worthington suffered a permanent indentation to his skull from the attack, and he now suffers from migraines and a serious post-traumatic stress disorder.
"The ferocity of the attack and the deliberateness of the attack all point to this being a very serious offence. The victim is still suffering significant psychological consequences," said Justice Chris Pullin.
Legge was initially jailed for six years, but after an appeal by prosecutors, judges this week upped the jail term to seven years and six months.
