The Italian player next takes on Dutchman Robin Haase, who had an easier time against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France with a 6-4 6-2 victory.
Also, Inigo Cervantes of Spain beat Germany's Michael Berrer 6-1 3-6 6-1.
