Thousands of mourners are expected to attend next week's service farewelling champion ironman Dean Mercer on the Gold Coast.

The 47-year-old died on Monday after a heart attack.

Stunned former competitors and the wider surf lifesaving community have expressed their shock at the death of the much-loved father of four.

Such has been the outpouring of grief that Mercer's wife, Reen, had to find a venue large enough to host the ceremony.

It was announced on Friday that a service for the two-time national ironman champion would be held at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre in Carrara on September 8.

Family spokesman Ian Hanson says Reen wants the surf lifesaving community to show its colours at the ceremony and create a carnival-style atmosphere.

"Her message to the community is to come with your club flags and banners, bring your boards and caps. Don't wear black - wear colour," Mr Hanson told News Corp Australia.

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign established for Mercer's family has reached almost $30,000 since being established on Monday.
