Tony Abbott says seven people have been stopped in Australia before attempting to travel to the Middle East.
It is alleged they were intending to join terrorist groups in the Middle East.
Mr Abbott made the comments at a media conference this morning.
Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton told reporters in Canberra on Thursday there was "an incident" but would not go into specifics.
"We are concerned about the number of people presenting at airports, particularly younger people, who might be seeking to travel overseas for reasons that would horrify Australians and their parents and family and community no doubt as well," he said.
Mr Abbott also declined to give details of the reported operation but said it showed the continuing allure of the death cult.
The Australian Border Force had counter-terror units working at all international airports, he said.
"Just recently they did their job in this particularly important and significant way," Mr Abbott told reporters.
When pressed about the incident by a reporter, Mr Dutton indicated more details might be available later on Thursday.
"It wouldn't be appropriate for us to respond and I don't think, as a responsible journalist, you would expect us to say anything beyond that," he said.
"We have provided the detail that we reasonably can at this point in time."
