Seven people have managed to escape in the middle of the night after a house caught on fire in Sydney's north.

The fire is believed to have started accidentally in a bedroom on the top floor of the Dundas Valley home just after midnight on Friday and extensively damaged the property. It took two hours to get under control, police say.

A 38-year-old woman was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for minor injuries after she slipped while escaping.
