Seven PNG fishers presumed dead in Torres Strait

"Where can seven people drown in Australian waters and nobody notice until days later? In the Torres Strait."

Queensland police say Papua New Guinea failed to raise the alarm for a number of days that seven fishermen, now presumed dead, were missing in the Torres Strait.

Three survivors from the PNG fishing boat were found last Monday but Queensland police say they were not informed until Friday.

A massive search and rescue effort was suspended when Queensland police found the boat had sunk almost two weeks earlier in Australia waters.

The boat was reportedly washed up on the PNG mainland last Wednesday.

Thursday Island Queensland Police Inspector David Lacey has told Stefan Armbruster they don't expect any more survivors.
