A severe weather warning for NSW has been downgraded by the Bureau of Meteorology as winds and rain subside but river flood warnings remain in place.

St George's Basin on the state's south coast remains on alert after river flooding was upgraded from moderate to major and a warning issued for the Belubula River in Canowindra.

Minor river flood warnings have been issued for the Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers and a moderate flood warning remains for the Shoalhaven.

Despite local evacuations the Mayor of Shoalhaven, Joanna Gash, said residents are "hardy" and staying positive.
