Severe storm warning for north of NSW

Severe storm warnings with hail likely have been issued for the NSW northwest slopes and plains by the Bureau of Meteorology.

People in the northwest of NSW are being told to brace for thunderstorms that are likely to bring large hailstones and heavy rainfall.

The storms may also lead to flash flooding and damaging winds, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

The BoM issued the severe storm warning on Sunday afternoon, indicating communities in Moree, Narrabri, Mungindi and Collarenebri could be impacted.

Residents are being urged to stay indoors, avoid driving, riding or walking through flood water and to keep clear of storm water drains and creeks.

Meanwhile a severe storm warning has been cancelled for the Northern Rivers and mid-north coast of NSW, following a bout of heavy rain.

While showers are still expected along with the risk of thunderstorms, the likelihood of heavy rainfall has dropped considerably, according to BoM.

A spokesperson from the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) said the majority of the storm activity generated on Sunday morning resulted in around 68 calls from the Newcastle region through to Ballina.

"The majority of those were in the mid-north area around Taree and just south of Port Macquarie," the SES spokesperson said.

"The rain was quite heavy earlier (Sunday) morning, so it was in relation to leaking roofs and inundation, so people were requesting things like sand bags."

The SES advises that people in the area should still keep clear of fallen power lines, flood water, creeks and storm drains and to beware of fallen debris on roads.
