Sevilla maintain Champions League bid

A seventh league win in eight games moves Sevilla to within just three points of Athletic Bilbao and a possible Champions League place.

Sevilla kept up the pressure on Athletic Bilbao for the fourth Champions League place in La Liga with a 4-1 thrashing of Espanyol at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Goals from Stephane Mbia and Kevin Gameiro had given the hosts a comfortable 2-0 advantage at half-time, but Sergio Garcia halved the deficit from the penalty spot a minute into the second-half.

Gameiro struck once more six minutes from time to make the points safe before Ivan Rakitic rounded off the scoring.

A seventh league win in eight games moves Sevilla to within just three points of Athletic Bilbao, although the Basques have a game in hand when they travel to Levante on Monday.

At the bottom Malaga and Elche eased their relegation fears with home victories over fellow strugglers Granada and Getafe respectively.

Malaga beat their Andalusian neighbours 4-1 in the early kick-off to move up eight points clear of the relegation zone in 11th.

It was a closer contest at the Martinez Valero as substitute Richmond Boakye stole all three points for the hosts deep into stoppage time to seal Elche's first win in six games.
