Sex offender in court for tracker removal

Sex offender Murray John Winder has faced a Perth court for allegedly removing his GPS tracking device, which was a condition of his release from jail.

A dangerous sex offender who allegedly removed his tracking device has appeared briefly in a Perth court.

Murray John Winder, 56, is allegedly the first such offender in Western Australia to remove a GPS bracelet, which was a condition of his release into the community.

Winder was freed from prison in March 2011 on a 10-year supervision order that was based around him living with his sister in Carnarvon.

He was last week arrested for removing the bracelet after pleading guilty to failing to provide a breath sample in March.

Winder did not enter a plea for the latest offence when he appeared in Perth Magistrates Court via videolink from Greenough Regional Prison on Monday.

He sought bail but that application has been adjourned until July 28 while further information is sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

In releasing Winder from jail in 2011, Supreme Court of Western Australia Justice John McKechnie said he was at high risk of re-offending without supervision.

Winder, who as an intellectual disability, has rape and sexual offences against children on his criminal record, dating back to 1980.
