Sexist jibe costs Italian football boss

Italian amateur football to get a new president after the sacking of Felice Belloli over a sexist remark concerning the funding of women's leagues.

The Italian amateur football league ousted its president Felice Belloli over a sexist remark against the funding of leagues for women, local media reported Thursday.

"Enough with giving money to this bunch of lesbians," Belloli was quoted as saying during a league meeting in early March.

The league council voted out Belloli after he declined to resign despite widespread criticism of his remark.

The outcry included a decision from the associations of footballers and of coaches not to play the women's Italian Cup final set for Saturday between Coppa Italia Brescia and Tavagnacco.

Carlo Tavecchio, the current president of the Italian football federation, was expected to temporarily take over the amateur league, which he chaired until August.

A vote on a new president is to be taken in the next three months.
