Sexual abuse carer jailed for 7.5 years

Daniel Mooney repeatedly molested a seriously disabled elderly woman at a nursing home in Wollongong, a court has heard.

A carer who sexually assaulted an elderly and disabled patient in a NSW nursing home has been jailed for at least seven and a half years.

Daniel Mooney, 42, was sentenced to a maximum term of 11 and a half years in the District Court in Wollongong on Monday for the aggravated sexual assault of the 82-year-old woman.

The court heard Mooney repeatedly molested the woman, who suffered from a number of serious disabilities, at a Wollongong nursing home where he worked as a carer.

He was arrested in October last year after nursing staff reported his suspicious behaviour to police.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual assault last month, while two other counts of aggravated indecent sexual assault were taken into consideration for sentencing.

Taking into account time served, Mooney will be eligible for parole in August 2020.
