Shark warning for Perth beachgoers

Baitfish off the Perth coast may be attracting sharks, explaining several sightings and tag detections in recent days.

Perth beachgoers are being urged to take extra care after a spate of shark sightings, and reports of baitfish along the coast.

The Department of Fisheries said the warning applied between Port Kennedy and Ocean Reef.

Tagged sharks were detected overnight at Warnbro Sound, 2km off Scarborough and at the northern end of Garden Island.

The department said there had also been several shark sightings reported over the past two days at various locations in the metropolitan area.

It said current environmental conditions were likely attractive to sharks and that may continue for several days.
