Sharkie ahead in Mayo, new polling shows

A ReachTEL poll shows Centre Alliance's Rebekha Sharkie is in a strong position to regain the seat of Mayo in July's by-election.

Liberal candidate Georgina Downer will struggle to win the South Australian seat of Mayo in July's federal by-election, new polling suggests.

A ReachTEL poll of 831 voters shows Centre Alliance candidate Rebekha Sharkie with a 58-42 lead over Ms Downer on a two-party preferred basis.

Ms Sharkie won Mayo in 2016 as part of the Nick Xenophon Team but resigned over her dual citizenship in May and is recontesting the seat for Centre Alliance.

Meanwhile, Ms Downer is seeking to follow in the footsteps of her father, Alexander, who held the seat from 1984 until 2008.

Labor has put forward telecommunications consultant and academic Professor Reg Coutts, while Ngarrindjeri elder Major "Moogy" Sumner is running for the Greens.
