Shaun Marsh to return for Shield clash

Shaun Marsh will leave Christchurch during the second trans-Tasman Test, with Glenn Maxwell to fly over and serve as substitute fielder if required.

Shaun Marsh will leave Christchurch on day three of the second trans-Tasman Test so he can take part in the upcoming Sheffield Shield round.

Marsh will fly out on Monday, returning to Perth where Western Australia host Queensland in a Shield fixture that starts on Thursday.

The 32-year-old played the opening ODI on Australia's tour of New Zealand but has otherwise served as a reserve batsman.

Marsh is the leading contender to be called up to Australia's Twenty20 World cup squad if hamstrung batsman Aaron Finch suffers a fresh setback.

National selectors are keen for the left-hander to spend some time in the middle given he hasn't played since the ODI in Auckland on February 3.

Glenn Maxwell, one of the first picked in Australia's T20 World Cup squad, will link up with the Test squad in NZ.

Maxwell will serve as substitute fielder at Hagley Oval if required, with Peter Siddle still laid up with his back injury.

Australia's T20 squad fly out to South Africa on February 28.

They face the Proteas in a three-match T20 series before shifting to India for the World Cup.
