Shield title should require win: Hussey

After Victoria claimed the Sheffield Shield with a draw against Western Australia, David Hussey says the final fixture could use some tinkering.

Minutes after holding up the Sheffield Shield trophy, veteran Victorian allrounder David Hussey has questioned the relevance of the final fixture.

The Bushrangers held out Western Australia in the five-day decider in Hobart, winning the title on points when the match finished in a draw on Wednesday.

It was the same result last year when NSW finished the season with enough points to win the final with a draw and did exactly that, relegating WA to second place.

"I truly believe you have to play the game to win the game and sadly if you get a draw and you finish on top you get to hold it up," Hussey told reporters after play on Wednesday.

"Maybe a bit of tinkering needs to be done."

WA declared on Wednesday morning with a 333-run lead, leaving themselves 96 overs to dismiss Victoria.

But on a flat wicket, it was a task too great and some effective stalling by the Victorians - including Hussey who finished unbeaten on 37 - took the match to a draw.

"I don't understand why it's a five-day game when we play four-day cricket (for the rest of the season)," Hussey said.

"I don't understand why you just have to draw the game to win the Shield."

Despite the nature of their win, Victoria achieved a marked turnaround in form, climbing up from a last-place finish in 2013-14.

"Coming from last to first is a fantastic effort, it's ... a great compliment to our captain and coaches for getting our boys' skills up," Hussey said.
