Ship levy cut to boost competitiveness

Ships entering Australian ports will pay less in a move the government hopes will make the local shipping industry more competitive.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss says the government will reduce the levy to 11.25 cents per net registered tonne from 14.25 cents, saving the industry about $9 million a year.

"The three cent reduction in the levy will help tackle the competitive challenges the shipping industry faces," he said.

The previous Labor government increased the levy in 2010 to help meet the cost of cleaning up the oil spill from the Pacific Adventurer, which occurred off the south-east coast of Queensland in March 2009.
