A policy expert in Sri Lanka has expressed sadness at the treatment of the 41 asylum seekers, now returned to the country by Australian authorities.
The group - intercepted late last month and handed over to Sri Lankan authorities at sea last weekend - were detained on their return.
They've appeared before a magistrate and all but five have been released.
It's unknown if the group will face charges for leaving the country illegally.
Abby Dinham spoke with executive director of the Centre for Policy Alternatives Doctor Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu.
