Shooters name Cootamundra candidate

Harden-Murrumburrah local Matthew Stadtmiller has been named as the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers candidate for the Cootamundra by-election.

The former deputy mayor of a forcibly amalgamated council will run against the NSW Nationals in the Cootamundra by-election.

Harden-Murrumburrah local Matthew Stadtmiller, 33, was announced as the for the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party candidate on Thursday.

Mr Stadtmiller will battle Nationals candidate Steph Cooke, a local florist who is replacing the outgoing Katrina Hodgkinson after 18 years in parliament.

The SFF are hoping to tap into the same discontent over forced council amalgamations that helped them defeat the Nationals in the neighbouring seat of Orange last year.

"As somebody born and bred in Harden-Murrumburrah, and (who) served on the forcibly amalgamated Harden Shire Council, I know first-hand what it's like when the National Party abandons rural people," Mr Stadtmiller said in a statement.

The NSW government is facing another two by-elections on top of Cootamundra.

Nationals MP and former education minister Adrian Piccoli confirmed his exit this week, sparking a by-election in the seat of Murray.

Meanwhile, Blacktown voters will also go to the polls following former Labor leader John Robertson's retirement.

The seats of North Shore and Gosford have also been contested this year, with the Liberals and Labor each retaining their respective seats.
