Bill Shorten regrets lying to broadcaster Neil Mitchell on-air about whether he met with Kevin Rudd during the Labor leadership saga of 2013.

The now opposition leader told 3AW radio at the time he hadn't met with Mr Rudd on the night of the 2013 parliamentary midwinter ball, but it was revealed on the ABC's The Killing Season program that he had.

"I do regret my remarks, the fact of the matter is I had met with Kevin Rudd," Mr Shorten told reporters on Wednesday night, saying he'd also phoned Mr Mitchell off-air to apologise.
