LABOR LEADER BILL SHORTEN HAS APPEARED AT THE UNIONS ROYAL COMMISSION WHERE HE WAS ASKED TO EXPLAIN ASPECTS OF HIS TIME AS BOSS OF THE AUSTRALIAN WORKERS UNION. HERE ARE THE MAIN POINTS
THE DONATION:
* Bill Shorten has revealed to a unions royal commission that he failed to disclose a $40,000 donation from a labour-hire company, made before the 2007 federal election.
* Labour-hire company Unibilt donated money through the AWU to be used to fund Mr Shorten's campaign director Lance Wilson between February and November 2007.
* The donation was declared to the Australian Electoral Commission on Monday, July 6, 2015.
* Mr Shorten denies he waited to see if donation would emerge in commission before deciding to declare it.
UNIBILT
* The labour-hire company made a $40,000 donation to the AWU to pay for Bill Shorten's campaign director, Lance Wilson, for 2007 federal election.
* Unibilt was in negotiations with AWU about a new enterprise bargaining agreement.
* Mr Shorten rejected allegations he used his position to further his own political aspirations, and that the company expected something in return for paying Mr Wilson's wages.
CLEANEVENT
* The commission has been investigating whether the AWU artificially inflated member numbers by charging event cleaning company, Cleanevent, $25,000 a year in membership fees.
* Bill Shorten was the AWU organiser dealing with Cleanevent when an EBA was being negotiated in 2006.
* Allegation is that EBA left workers worse off.
* Bill Shorten says he can't recall if he visited the Cleanevent hospitality tent during 2006 Melbourne Cup carnival, and whether the EBA was discussed at that time.
