Politicians face off in parliament on Tuesday, with the prime minister going into battle with a dipping approval rating, while Bill Shorten's is on the rise, the latest Newspoll shows.

According to the poll, published in the Australian, dissatisfaction with Tony Abbott has risen four percentage points to 38 per cent. Mr Shorten's rating remained unchanged on 24.

The prime minister's satisfaction rating has fallen from 47 per cent to 45 per cent, and satisfaction with opposition leader has risen five percentage points to 37 per cent.

The Newspoll also shows the two main parties stand where they were at the September election, with the coalition holding a two-party-preferred lead of 53 to 47 per cent.

However, the coalition's lead has dropped in the last two weeks.

It is still well ahead of Labor in primary vote count.

Its primary vote has, however, slipped back a bit to where it was at the election, while Labor's is slightly less than it was in September.

The coalition has dipped from 47 per cent to 45 per cent, while Labor's primary vote has risen one point from 31 per cent to 32 per cent.

Mr Abbott still has a strong lead as preferred prime minister - 46 per cent to Mr Shorten's 30 per cent.
