Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says the jump in the jobless rate to 6.3 per cent in July is "greatly concerning".

The unemployment rate rose from an upwardly revised 6.1 per cent in June and has returned to a near 13-year high seen at the start of the year.

"We see that there is now over 800,000 of our fellow Australians ... unemployed. That is the largest number of unemployed Australians in over 20 years," Mr Shorten told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday.
