Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will seek a government briefing after bumping into the father of Adam Whittington, the dual Australian-British citizen being detained in Lebanon over a bungled child recovery operation,

Whittington was excluded from a deal that resulted in the release of Australian mother Sally Faulkner, whose children were at the heart of the saga, and a 60 Minutes crew in Lebanon to film the recovery.

Mr Shorten ran into Whittington's father during a campaign visit to Campbelltown, in south-western Sydney, and told WSFM Radio on Thursday he would ask the government what it is doing about the matter.
