Labor leader Bill Shorten has welcomed Wayne Swan's decision to recontest the next federal election, describing him as a distinguished contributor.

The former treasurer intends on running in his Queensland seat of Lilley, seeking his eighth term in parliament.

Mr Shorten rejected suggestions Mr Swan has ambitions to return to the frontbench, saying his team respects the experience of former ministers, as well as the enthusiasm of new backbenchers.
