Shot clock for most AFL games

The AFL will implement a 30-second shot clock rule at most of its venues in 2016, however the SCG and Gabba won't be included.

The AFL will have a shot clock at most grounds in a bid to speed up slow-moving forwards.

Players will have 30 seconds to begin walking in to take their shot at goal from inside 50, while the timer will count down on the big screen for players, officials and spectators to see.

If the player does not begin walking in before the countdown expires, play on will be called.

The implementation of the rule comes following a successful trial in the NAB Challenge.

"The feedback from our umpires was that the countdown clock helped assure them they were consistent with the 30 seconds provided to players when kicking for goal," AFL umpires' boss Wayne Campbell said.

However while matches at the MCG, Etihad Stadium, Adelaide Oval, Metricon and Domain Stadiums will all feature the timer, the SCG and Gabba still require technology upgrades for it to be used.
