Port Adelaide key defender Jackson Trengove will undergo surgery on his left shoulder this week and faces a race against time to be fit for the Power's AFL season opener on April 5.
The 24-year-old was injured when he fell awkwardly after a marking contest at training.
Port's head of high performance Darren Burgess said Trengove would be back running within 10 days and was aiming to be fit for the round one clash against Fremantle.
"We expect Jackson should be able to maintain his fitness, to a large degree, as he'll be able to do most of the team running over the pre-season," Burgess said.
"He does have very good recuperative powers and he does everything right in terms of his rehab so we're hopeful of a speedy recovery."
If the shoulder heals in time, Trengove will play his 100th game at home in round two against Sydney.
