West Coast forward Josh Kennedy has nominated Luke Shuey at the next captain of the club, saying the ice-cool midfielder deserves the role when Shannon Hurn passes on the baton.

Shuey wrote himself into AFL folklore on Saturday night when he kicked the match-winning goal after the final siren of extra time in West Coast's two-point elimination final win over Port Adelaide.

The Eagles will now take on GWS in Saturday night's semi-final at Spotless Stadium, with the winner of that to face Richmond in a preliminary final.

Shuey's calmness under pressure has drawn widespread praise.

The 27-year-old even managed to have a chuckle to himself once the final siren of extra time sounded as he lined up for goal.

Shuey joined Kennedy as a vice-captain at the start of this year, with 30-year-old Hurn now in his third season as skipper.

Kennedy said Shuey will be the perfect candidate to take over from Hurn whenever the hard-nosed defender decides to relinquish the role.

"I can probably tell you now that he'll take it," Kennedy said of Shuey.

"I won't be taking the captaincy. I'm happy just sitting behind the scenes.

"Shuey has been a terrific footballer for this club. He's a terrific vice-captain.

"And I've got no doubt he'll probably come on and captain our footy club for many more years."

Kennedy booted two goals in extra time to help West Coast secure victory.

But he managed just one goal in regular time, and later conceded he was beaten on the night.

Kennedy managed just one goal in the final-round win against Adelaide, when the Eagles racked up 100 points.

His past two games have been in stark contrast to the previous six, where he racked up 30 goals.

The two-time Coleman medallist said it was a good sign that West Coast were winning games even when he was quiet.

"I don't think I played that well on the weekend. I was out of it a lot of the game," Kennedy said.

"But it was great to see guys like Jack (Darling) step up. And big Drew Petrie was unbelievable. He really set us up.

"Having a lot more wider spread of players, is what you want, especially coming to this time of the year."

Kennedy said he was right in the thick of the team celebrations immediately after Shuey kicked the goal.

"I threw a few elbows to try to get towards Luke," Kennedy joked.

"I got right in the middle, and was just giving him a big hug. I didn't want to let him go. It was a great end to the game."
